This walking holiday is available in two versions:
• Level 2 — leisurely & relaxed
• Level 3 — for more experienced walkers
You’ll explore quiet country roads and panoramic trails surrounded by silver-green olive groves, fertile vineyards, and rolling Umbrian hills. Since Roman times, Umbria has been praised for its authentic beauty — clear rivers, natural springs, lakes, mountain streams, and waterfalls. Along the way, you’ll discover some of the region’s most beautiful medieval towns: Assisi, Spello, Foligno, Bevagna, Collemancio, Torgiano, and Perugia. A journey through history, wine culture, nature, and the slow charm of central Italy.
Your journey begins in Assisi, on the slopes of Mount Subasio, crowned by the Rocca Maggiore fortress (505 m a.s.l.). With its narrow lanes, welcoming squares, Roman remains, and magnificent medieval monuments, Assisi is a true open-air museum. Walking through olive groves, you reach Spello. The scenic path along the ancient Roman Aqueduct leads to the fortified hamlet of Collepino before returning to Spello and continuing by train to Foligno, with its remarkable cathedral and Palazzo Trinci.
In the second part of the trip you’ll discover other Umbrian gems:
• medieval Bevagna
• hilltop Collemancio
• Bettona, famous for its Goose Festival
• wine-village Torgiano
and finally Perugia — the regional capital, full of Renaissance palaces, museums, churches, and lively shopping streets.
The level 3 tour is a 7-day walking tour. The level 2 tour is an 8-day tour and can be extended with two nights: one extra night in Assisi and one extra night in Bevagna. In Assisi, you can make a cultural walk along its medieval monuments. You will get a description of an itinerary passing all the most important sights of Assisi. From Bevagna, a loop tour will lead you to Montefalco, a city known for its wonderful wines and its welcoming historic centre.
DIFFICULTY: 2 and 3
Level 2: Moderate with only a few demanding stretches uphill. You walk in a hilly landscape with some up and downhill walking. There is still time to visit the medieval cities along the route. Walking time is between 4 and 5 hours a day; daily distances between 9 km / 6,2 mi and 17,5 km / 11 mi with an average of 3-4 km/hour. Some walking experience is needed.
Total km/miles:
8-day tour: 71 km / 44 mi
10-day tour: 88,5 km / 55 miles
Level 3: A walking tour for expert walkers with good physical condition. The differences in level are not too much, but daily km/miles are significant between 17 km / 10,6 mi and 22 km / 13, 7 mi
